Just returned from a great week in Flachau.  First few days very warm +9 one day,  however the snow was mujch better than we anticipated.  Flachau and the surrounding areas have a fantastic system of snow making, taking every opportunity of creating snow when the temperatures are low.   I personally think mixing with new fallen snow creates a great solid base ensuring the slopes are as good as possible.  For those of you who know the mountains -  they can soon bite and bite they did for a couple of days with heavy snow falls ensuring our last few days were skied in fantastic powder (alas not good for my aging broken knee ligaments but thats another story!).  We left to fantastic sunshine so following guests are going to have a great time.

We have been to Flachau many times now and it baffles me why it is still not widely known to the british ski clientel....  its a fantastic area.  If you have the full ski amade lift pass and have a car try a few of the other areas,  Schladming,  Mulbach are just a couple.

Tuckhaus is a fantastic place to stay having everything anyone could ever need or want to make a ski holiday home from home.  The collection of DVD's ensure everyone has entertainment not to mention the playstation for the kids - young & old!  An iPod docking station makes for great music.   Do watch the TV particulary early morning on Sat 3  which shows you panoramic views of the ski areas in Austria & Germany,  this is a great way of finding out what the weather is like for the day & the next few days.  The garden in front of the french windows, giving you great views,  is an ideal place to build an ice bar!  For those who follow us you may find a few bottles which were buried in the heavy snowfall...if you do enjoy!

So how can I sum up Flachau & Tuckhuas.....  one word  FANTASTIC..  If you have never stayed at Tuckhus in Flachau then book up fast you will not regret it -  for those that have visited before then come again soon - we will be back in March.

Flachau was an impressive base to explore the ski area. We hired a car and the journey seemed effortless. The apartment was brilliant, everything worked and we enjoyed a number of the DVDs. It is a ’home from home’ which is just what you need after a days skiing. We managed to ski in and out (ok there is a 2 minute walk to the piste) on several occasions. We were advised to try Flachauwinkle and found the skiing there was excellent (both sides).

Flachau was a great place to go out in - we enjoyed the music bar and found several places to eat that were good value.

The real test for any rental property is would we return - the answer for us is a resounding YES.

Have just arrived back from having a fab week in Flachau. The airport transfer ran smoothly allowing us to get the apartment in a timely manner. The apartment was as expected - a very high standard and definitely home from home. Having recently bought our own skis and boots getting Cameron (aged 11) kitted out at Intersport was very straight forward. The ski area around Flachau can very easily be explored using the bus system; we managed to get from Flachau to Wagrain, Flachauwinkl to Kleinarl to Zauchensee. Our ski instructor (recommended by Helen) took us from Eben to Altenmarkt so I guess we did pretty well on our 6 day ski pass.

Needless to say we were shattered at the end of each day and having a welcoming place to stay definitely made all the difference.

We stayed at the Tuckhaus from 10th to 17th January 2009 and had an excellent time.

The apartment was fantastic and just like a home from home. We expecially enjoyed being able to have pancakes for breakfast and collapse in a heap after returning from skiing.

The apartment had everything we needed for our stay and was well equipped and very clean.

I would agree that it is good to ski back to the apartment at the end of the day as walking up the slope / hill in ski boots is not good. We managed to ski right to the top of the metal steps one day which was fab.

The walk up the hill via the road is short but steep and certainly got us panting - we found it easier to walk up the ski slope to the apartment after dinner.

The restaurants in flachau are all good, special mentions to the Musicstadl, the Hoagascht, and Schnitzleck. (See the leaflet in the apartment.)

On the slopes we enjoyed the run down to Wagrain and on the 8der red cable car that also goes close to Wagrain. The restaurants on the slopes were also good and just what you needed after hard days skiing. The one near the topliner lift with a smokey bbq grill outside was our favourite.

We are looking forward to visiting flachau again and may even buy our own boots for next time.  Also message for Maggs - the paintings are fab !

I stayed at Tuck Haus with a group of friends during the first weeek of January 2009. We had a great time skiing all day everyday and I would thoroughly recommend it to everyone.

We visited flachau as part of a larger group of friends with ability from beginer through to advanced, and the ski region definetly suited us all. The flachau region which can be accessed from the chalet door gave us two full days of fast exploration before we were skiing the same runs again. The bus network in Flachau is excellent and can be accessed from all the lifts which return to the valley floor. A bus to flachau - winkel zauchensee (10 mins) is definetly worthwhile for another two days skiing and the smaller area of flachau - winkel kleinarl (two minutes on a tractor from flachau winkel zauchensee) is also worth a day trip. Finally the other side of the village of wagrain provides another excellent ski area which is well worth a visit.

In terms of visisting these areas by bus I would give one piece of advice. You can ski down to the bus stops in the morning which is nice and easy. However, if you try to return to flachau after the lifts close at four you will have to walk up the piste or the road which is not easy with all the kit. We found it was much better to go to the other areas early and leave at about three. This allowed us to get a lift back up the mountain and then ski down to the house. Much easier!!

All in all the skiing is great, and the house is perfectly equipped in a fantastic location. We are considering returning in the summer to use the wagrain mountain bike park, where they open the ski lifts for mountain bikes!

Forgot to say you must try the Musistadl (Music bar) it is fantastic and they do a great Birthday package see website www.flachauer-gutshof.at

The entertainment is excellent wth live music in winter or summer.... we enjoyed ourselves so much we soon consumed 2 bottles of very good wine which gave us a very hefty bill on our last night!!!

Stayed at Tuckhaus 30/8/08 to 6/9/08 - what a fantastic holiday. The Tucks are our best friends who we have skied with many times but never this area, Peter and I have been to this area 3 times many years ago and always wondered why it took our friends so long to try Flachau! Are we glad they did as they decided to buy Tuckhaus and what a fantastc choice. The location couldn’t be better both for summer or winter & the apartment is fantastc with everything you will need for a great holiday anytime of the year.

We played golf at Radstadt, Schladming & Goldegg which was great ( althought my golf wasn’t but that’s another story!) I am the webmaster for ski tuckhaus so have a look at the site soon as I plan to write up a golf journal.

The area is great in Summer with much to do and see the weather was very good for end of Aug early September, we were sill able to sit and have breakfast on the patio taking in the stunning views.

Thanks to the Tuck family we will be back... already booked for Jan & March and soon will for Summer. We can’t recommend Tuckhaus and the area highly enough - so go one make a booking you will not regret it.

We stayed at the Tuckhouse from 29/3 - 5/4 and had a great time. It is a few minutes literally from the main Gondola slope so has great access on ski’s. We have skiied France for the last 15 years and were really pleased how reasonable everything was in Austria.

The Apartment is very cosy and had good DVD’s and a PS2 to keep children and adults entertained.

We hired a car and did manage to ski on 2 other areas, one of which was Wagrain which is only 10 minutes away in a car.

Stayed at the Tuckhaus Easter 2008 and it snowed and snowed and snowed for 3 days! Plenty of ski-ing in good powder! The apartment was almost too cosy to leave, very well presented, warm and clean with the added attraction of being very close to the piste. All the restaurants we visited were excellent. Two very good and well stocked supermarkets in Flachau.

A brilliant, relaxing holiday was had by all, including our two teenagers!!

Carnavalsvakantie doorgebracht in Tuckhause in Flachau.

We have just arrived back home after our first visit to Flachau and we were lucky enough to be the first visitors to Tuckhaus! Have already started to recommend Flachau and Tuckhaus to friends and family! We have given some honest feedback below. Apologies for any typos!!

We were lucky enough to find Tuckhaus when we were looking for a last minute New Year break. Helen, Kevin and family had just finished equipping the apartment as had the other owners of the neighbouring apartments. This is a new development on the piste and there is still building work in progress but it did not spoil our trip in any way. The access road to the apartment is a bit steep but it did not cause us a problem even with a pram, a 7 year old and a shed full of wine!!!

We had a fantastic week in a very comfortable, warm, well equipped modern apartment which is an ideal and convienant base for skiiers and non skiiers. Dad Craig, spent a great week on the slopes; Alice our 7 year old progressed from complete beginner at the Hermann Maier ski school to skiing on the mountain by the end of the week and winning the ski school race! Angus, our 21/2 year old wouldn’t settle in kindergarten but has become a great sledger and a wannabe snowboarder! Mum, Morag, a complete none skiier was planning some individual lessons but had to cancel due to uncooperative Angus! Never mind, plenty to explore, including Salzburg which is only 40 mins drive away - some great shoe shops in Altenmarkt (about 3kms from Flachau... well I did save on the lessons and ski hire!!!!) as well as great lunches, good walking (there are some lovely winter trails part of which can be walked with a snow friendly pram) and apres skiing with Craig and Alice!

Flachau is a completely unspoilt area of Austria which has managed to ensure that it has not become a tourist resort - not an Irish Bar in sight but still plenty of good places to eat, fantastic apres skiing atmosphere and lots of fun! And it’s skiing facilities are second to none! Craig has been on a few skiing holidays in France and Italy and would definitely put Flachau at the top of the list. We just hope it remains a well kept secret!

Tuckhaus is a first class apartment and just as it is described on the website. Helen, Kevin and family were excellent hosts!

A few tips after our week would be;

Although everything is within walking distance, we would recommend a car. There is so much to explore around and some really good options on the skiing front that it just made our stay really convienant. But that was just us - a car is not a necessity and there are
excellent bus links to the other ski lifts around! Car hire at Salsburg airport is really easy though - you come out of arrivals, cross the road and you are at all the car hire desks. Car hire return prooved a little more difficult as the sign for return was not lit - and we drove round a few times. So watch out for that one! It is the first ’p’ sign and you drive down a ramp underneath the main car park.

There is a kindergarten called Penguin at the main ski slope. You go into the ski hire shop which is opposite the main gondola station to access it(has a penguin on the roof). I think we went on a bad day and it would be worth checking it out and making your own mind up. Cost is 8 Euros per hour and it is open 10am to 3pm. They seem to do quite a bit for older toddlers as they have a miniclub area on the mountain as you get off the main gondola.

If you don’t like Penguin, try the kindergarten facilities at Hotel Felsenhof which is just about 2km from Flachau. Although the facilities are for residents only, they will take non resident children if they have room. It is run by Sonia, who although lovely and spoke good English, could not comfort our high maintenance 2 year old!!! Cost there is 10 euros per hour and it is open from 9.30 to 3pm. Telephone 004364512251.

For an excellent night out with good food we would recommend the Musistadl. It is only a 5 minute walk from the apartment - great food, wine and live music every night from 9pm. Children are made really welcome but remember people can still smoke inside in Austria! The music is just good old fashioned sing along fun with a great atmostphere. Best to book even mid week.

If you don’t have all your skiing and cold weather gear - don’t stress before you go. The town of Altenmarkt has got some excellent ski shops and we were able to buy Angus some excellent snow boots there as we had only got his bob the builder wellies!!! Only about 3kms from Flachau.

For good apres skiing, an excellent sledging hill and a gentle beginners slope head to the area to the right as you look at the main mountain in Flachau. Basically walk in front of the main gondola station towards the ski school and nursery slopes - if you look ahead you will see some big yellow umberellas in the distance and just follow the path through the snow and it is less than a 5 minute walk! Be there early to try and grab one of the lovely couches inside or outside!

For excellent cosy lunches try the restaurant by the main gondonla - can’t remember the name but if you are looking at the entrance to the gondonla walk to your right and walk up the side of the lift station and you will see it in front of you. They only accept cash though!

Don’t go to the Spar in Flachau at around 4.30pm - it is packed and it can be a bit stressful if you don’t know what you are looking for!

Some of the card machines in the shops (including the ski hire shop that we used) do not accept cards with the card number across the middle. Austrian Switch and Visa cards do not have a card number running through the middle of the card. They were not able to over ride it in any way so it meant a few trips to the cash machine! The supermarket as you come into Flachau is one such place so make sure you have cash before you get to the till otherwise it can be a bit stressful!!

Finally, take your bubble bath - Tuckhaus has a lovely bathroom with cosy underfloor heating and hot water is in plentiful supply. What ever adventures your day has given you fill your wine glass, run a lovely bath, lie back and relax!

I hope our experiences have been useful... if you are thinking about booking Tuckhaus, don’t think too much and just go for it... you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!!
